INDS 191 The Cuban Revolution and its Social Impact: Focus on Social, Environmental and Agricultural Aspects

The Cuban economy has historically been largely based on agricultural production. By the end of the 18th century, Cuba was the largest exporter of sugar in the world and the quality of its celebrated cigars is still considered to be unrivaled. In this course, students will explore the ways in which the Cuban Revolution has and has not transformed society by focusing on the way Cubans relate to their land and environment. Special attention will be paid to the effects of U.S. policy and the U.S. embargo against Cuba as well as to perceptions on the island to the recent events taking place in the relationship between the two countries. Questions of race, class, and gender will be woven throughout as will attention to the intersections of politics, economics, and religion. By traveling the island, experiencing cultural and social activities, and engaging with experts in several fields, students will have an opportunity to critically evaluate the complexities of contemporary Cuba.
